Thinking about treatment abroad can bring up plenty of practical questions. How do I book? When do I pay? Will I need new tests? Who confirms my treatment date, and what happens when I return home?
We have created a new treatment journey guide on My Medical Gateway’s “How It Works” page to answer those questions in plain English. Accessible through the navigation menu at the top right of the platform, it explains the booking and treatment process in seven easy-to-follow steps, from creating your free account to recovering at home.
You can read the whole guide before deciding whether to proceed, then return to it whenever you want to check what happens next. Here is how the process works.
1. Create your free account
Your My Medical Gateway account gives you a place to keep track of your progress and see the next stage of your treatment journey. Registration is free.
As you explore your options and choose your treatment and hospital, read the Treatment Package details carefully. Understanding what is included helps you plan with confidence and ask any questions before moving forward.
2. Accept your contract with your chosen hospital
Once you have chosen your hospital, you will be asked to sign a healthcare agreement directly with it. This sets out the hospital’s responsibilities, including reviewing your diagnostic tests and offering treatment dates once you are approved to proceed.
The hospital provides your medical care; MMG is the digital platform that helps you arrange it. If anything about the process is unclear, ask for an explanation before signing.
3. Make your initial payment
The initial payment is 10% of your Treatment Package price. As the new guide explains, this secures your place and fixed package price and enables the hospital’s medical team to begin reviewing your case. Treatment remains subject to the hospital’s clinical assessment and approval.
If you would like reassurance before paying, you can start with a free doctor consultation to obtain a preliminary assessment. This gives you an opportunity to explore your suitability for treatment before taking the next step.
4. Complete the diagnostic tests your hospital needs
Your hospital may need scans, blood tests or other information to assess your case and plan your treatment. MMG can help you find diagnostic services close to home.
The guide explains that the hospital needs recent results, from the last 30 days, so you will usually need new tests for the formal assessment. Confirm which tests are required, and when they should be completed, with your hospital before arranging them.
Existing NHS or GP reports can still be useful for a preliminary consultation, even if they are older. That initial opinion is separate from the hospital’s review and approval of the results needed to proceed with treatment.
5. Choose your treatment date
After the hospital has approved you for treatment, it will offer three treatment dates within six weeks. Choose the one that suits you best. If none works for you, the hospital will help you find an alternative.
The remaining 90% of your Treatment Package price is due no later than 14 days before treatment. Having the payment stages set out clearly helps you understand what is payable and when.
6. Arrange your trip and travel for treatment
With your treatment date confirmed, you can arrange your travel and accommodation. Your Treatment Package explains the expected number of nights in hospital and how long you need to stay nearby afterwards for the postoperative care or rehabilitation specified in your package.
Before booking accommodation, speak to your MMG Customer Care Manager at the hospital. They can recommend somewhere nearby and help you understand the practical arrangements. Check your package inclusions and budget separately for travel, accommodation outside hospital and diagnostic tests.
You then travel to your chosen hospital, where its medical team will welcome you and provide your treatment.
7. Return home with a recovery and follow up plan
Once your hospital confirms you are fit to fly, you can return home. You will leave with medical discharge documentation and recovery instructions, so you know what to do next.
Your hospital will arrange a remote follow-up appointment within 90 days to check your progress. If you have questions or concerns during recovery, your MMG Patient Coordinator can help put you in touch with the hospital’s medical team.
Want to speak to a doctor before deciding
You do not have to resolve every uncertainty on your own. If you already have diagnostic results or reports from your GP or the NHS, even if they are out of date, the free doctor consultation offers a way to seek an initial opinion on your suitability for treatment. Further tests and formal clinical approval may still be required.
Select “Start with a free Doctor Consultation” at the top of the platform if you would like preliminary advice before making an initial payment or arranging new tests.
