The Operation Is Only Half the Story: NHS Rehab Crisis Puts Patient Recovery at Risk

NHS rehabilitation services are under mounting pressure, with physiotherapy staff warning that shortages of people, equipment and rehabilitation space are affecting patient recovery. For anyone considering orthopaedic surgery, the message is clear: getting an operation is only part of the journey. MMG offers patients access to private surgery abroad through European hospitals, with fixed-price Treatment Packages that include post-operative care such as physiotherapy, where it is integral to treatment, helping patients to get back on their feet.

For patients waiting for an operation, getting through the surgery can understandably feel like the finishing line. In reality, for many procedures it is only the beginning of recovery.

That is why the latest warning from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) should concern anyone considering orthopaedic surgery or another treatment where rehabilitation plays an important part in achieving the best possible outcome.

The CSP has taken its concerns to the national media after its latest member survey revealed mounting pressure on NHS physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. The organisation is calling on the Government and NHS leaders to lift recruitment freezes, protect rehabilitation facilities and invest in the physiotherapy workforce.

The figures are troubling.

According to the CSP survey, 79% of NHS physiotherapy staff are concerned that staffing levels are insufficient to meet patient demand. Some 68% report recruitment freezes within their services, compared with 53% a year earlier. More than a third – 37% – say physiotherapy posts have been deleted and 30% report cuts to entire services.

Perhaps the most important figures, however, concern what this means for patients.

The CSP says 77% of physiotherapy staff report being unable to offer the quality of rehabilitation patients need. Some 65% say they do not have access to the rehabilitation equipment patients require and 56% believe the loss of rehabilitation space is contributing to increased disability.

This is not simply an NHS staffing story. It is a patient recovery story.

An operation doesn’t end when you leave hospital

Successful surgery involves far more than what happens in the operating theatre.

For procedures such as hip replacement, knee replacement and other orthopaedic operations, appropriate rehabilitation is a critical part of restoring movement, strength and independence. Physiotherapy can also help patients understand how they should move, exercise and progressively return to normal activities.

The CSP has warned for years that inadequate access to rehabilitation can have consequences throughout the healthcare system. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation can help reduce hospital admissions, shorten hospital stays and reduce demand for residential care.

The current deterioration therefore exposes another weakness in an already stretched NHS treatment pathway.

Millions of people are already waiting for NHS treatment. For someone who has waited months for an operation, the prospect of then encountering another overstretched service during recovery is hardly reassuring.

And it raises an important question for patients considering private healthcare: when comparing the price of surgery, what happens afterwards?

MMG believes patients should look at the whole treatment pathway

At My Medical Gateway (MMG), our approach is straightforward. Where post-operative care such as physiotherapy is integral to a treatment, it forms part of the MMG fixed-price Treatment Package provided by the healthcare provider. The package also requires appropriate medical checks before discharge and a remote post-operative check no later than the 90th day following treatment.

This matters because comparing the headline price of an operation does not necessarily compare like with like.

MMG Treatment Packages are designed specifically for medical travellers and bring together the principal elements of the treatment journey rather than treating the operation as an isolated transaction. Our patient information makes clear that defined post-operative care and rehabilitation are included where clinically appropriate, including physiotherapy following orthopaedic surgery, to put patients back on their feet.

That post-operative care takes place within or close to the treating hospital, creating a more integrated recovery pathway before the patient returns home.

Patients also receive appropriate medical checks before discharge. Where post-operative physiotherapy is integral to the treatment, transfers between the patient’s accommodation and the place of treatment are included within the price of the Treatment Package.

This is an important distinction when comparing treatment abroad with both NHS treatment and UK private surgery.

Private healthcare should mean more than getting the operation sooner

Many patients exploring private surgery in the UK are doing so because they want to escape long NHS waiting lists. But speed of access should not be the only consideration.

Patients should ask what happens after the procedure. Is rehabilitation included? Where will physiotherapy take place? Who is responsible for post-operative follow-up? What exactly is included in the fixed price?

Through MMG, patients can compare private surgery abroad at European hospitals, including fixed-price Treatment Packages designed around the needs of people travelling for healthcare.

For someone considering orthopaedic surgery abroad, that means looking beyond the operating theatre and considering the complete journey from diagnosis and pre-operative assessment through surgery, discharge, rehabilitation and follow-up.

The CSP’s warning highlights why that matters.

Britain’s rehabilitation services are under growing pressure at precisely the time demand is increasing. Recruitment freezes, deleted posts, reduced facilities and shortages of equipment cannot be dismissed as administrative problems. Ultimately, they affect patients and their ability to recover.

Choosing faster treatment should not mean forgetting what comes afterwards.

At MMG, we believe post-operative recovery should be considered from the beginning – because successful healthcare is not simply about having an operation.

It is about getting back to your life.

Don’t just compare the price of your operation. Compare the complete treatment and recovery pathway.

With My Medical Gateway, you can explore affordable private healthcare and surgery abroad at European hospitals, compare treatment prices and understand what is included before you make a decision. Where physiotherapy or other post-operative care is integral to your treatment, it is included within the MMG Treatment Package and Treatment Price.
