Every week of delayed treatment can mean lost income, cancelled contracts and growing financial pressure. This September, My Medical Gateway is launching a series of campaigns supporting tradespeople, farmers, drivers, contractors and small business owners through the MMG Advantage Affinity Programme, helping organisations give their members faster access to affordable consultant-led treatment at accredited European hospitals with transparent fixed-price healthcare packages.
For millions of self-employed people across the UK, good health is not simply a personal matter. It is the foundation of their livelihood.
Unlike many employees, self-employed workers cannot rely on paid sick leave, employer-funded support or a company absorbing the financial impact of prolonged illness. When pain, injury or an untreated medical condition prevents them from working, the consequences can be immediate: lost income, cancelled contracts, reduced business activity and financial insecurity.
September is a key month for reaching working people affected by delayed treatment, with a series of national events, economic releases and MMG campaigns focused on workforce health, mobility and productivity. Leading this initiative is Sir Mark Worthington OBE, Chairman of the MMG Advantage Affinity Programme.
The programme gives members of participating organisations access to exclusive discounts on consultant-led treatment packages at MMG Accredited Hospitals across Europe, helping them obtain high-quality private healthcare more quickly and at a lower cost. At the same time, it enables partner organisations to offer a valuable new member benefit while helping more people return to work sooner through timely treatment.
Together, these September initiatives are designed to strengthen partnerships with the organisations that represent Britain’s self-employed workforce while helping more people return to work sooner through timely treatment.
The hidden cost of waiting for treatment
For many self-employed people, waiting months for surgery is not simply an inconvenience. It can threaten their ability to earn.
A builder unable to lift safely because of a shoulder injury cannot complete contracts.
A farmer struggling with hip or knee pain may find daily physical work increasingly difficult.
A driver with back problems may be unable to continue working.
A tradesperson waiting for orthopaedic surgery may lose customers, income and professional momentum.
These challenges are central to MMG’s “Waiting List Economy” project, a major research report due for publication on 19 November which examines how delayed treatment affects not only patients but also employers, businesses and the wider UK economy.
September provides several opportunities to highlight this issue. Back British Farming Day on 9 September focuses attention on farmers and agricultural workers affected by musculoskeletal conditions, while World Physiotherapy Day on 8 September highlights rehabilitation, returning to work and restoring mobility.
Britain’s Working Body
On 17 September, meanwhile, MMG will publish Britain’s Working Body Report, examining the impact of musculoskeletal conditions and delayed elective treatment on tradespeople, farmers, drivers, manual workers and the wider working population.
The report reflects a simple reality: for many workers, their body is their business.
The self-employed economy depends on people being physically able to work. When healthcare delays prevent people from returning to full fitness, the consequences extend beyond the individual. They affect families, customers, businesses and local economies.
National Tradesmen’s Day on 18 September provides another important opportunity to engage directly with builders, electricians, plumbers, decorators, mechanics, landscapers and other skilled professionals whose ability to work depends on maintaining their health and mobility.
The MMG Advantage Affinity Programme
Throughout September, MMG will use these national awareness dates and sector opportunities to expand the MMG Advantage Affinity Programme.
The objective is straightforward: to work with organisations that represent working people and provide their members with discounted access to trusted, affordable healthcare options when they need them.
Potential Affinity Programme partners include: Trade associations, Professional bodies, Chambers of Commerce, Membership organisations, Agricultural organisations, Employee associations and Business networks. By partnering with these organisations, MMG can help their members access consultant-led treatment through MMG Accredited Healthcare Providers across Europe, often at significantly lower costs than equivalent UK private healthcare.
For Affinity Programme partners, the benefits are a one-third reduction of MMG’s platform fee which is equivalent to about 5% discount on the booking for a Treatment Package. For MMG, every new Affinity Programme partnership creates another trusted route through which patients can access treatment, while increasing awareness of MMG among millions of potential customers.
A healthcare solution designed for working people
Self-employed people often delay treatment because they cannot afford the time away from work or because they fear the cost of private healthcare.
That delay can make conditions worse and extend the period before they can return to earning.
MMG exists to provide another option.
Through its network of MMG Accredited Healthcare Providers, patients can access transparent fixed-price treatment packages, consultant-led care and coordinated support throughout their treatment journey.
For someone whose income depends on being fit and mobile, certainty matters.
Knowing what treatment will cost. Knowing when treatment can happen. Knowing who is supporting their recovery.
That certainty can make the difference between remaining unable to work and getting back to business.
September is therefore not just a month of awareness campaigns. It is an opportunity to start a wider conversation with the organisations that represent Britain’s working population.
The message is clear:
Healthy workers support a healthy economy. And for millions of self-employed people, faster access to the right treatment can mean the difference between waiting in pain and getting back to doing what they do best.
