According to figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, 30,460 patients were waiting for hip replacement surgery in England at the end of March, with an average waiting time of 34 weeks. In Scotland, 8,537 people are awaiting treatment, with the average referral-to-treatment period approaching 39 weeks.
The longest waits are in Wales, where some health boards reported average waiting times of between 64 and 76 weeks. The Sunday Express also reported that a growing number of patients are removing themselves from NHS waiting lists after deciding to fund treatment privately.
Commenting in the newspaper, MMG spokesperson Sara Gezdari said many patients have already spent months or years trying to manage their condition before they are finally referred for surgery.
“The true impact of waiting is measured not in weeks but in declining quality of life due to increasing pain levels, sleep disruption, reduced mobility and more,” she said. “The longer treatment is delayed, the greater the risk that these effects become entrenched.”
Sara also highlighted the wider economic consequences of delayed treatment, particularly for self-employed people and those in physically demanding occupations whose livelihoods depend upon maintaining their mobility.
