HM Málaga Joins MMG as UK Demand for Hip and Knee Replacements Surges

Hospital HM Málaga has joined the My Medical Gateway (MMG) platform as demand from UK patients for hip replacement surgery and knee replacement surgery continues to grow. With NHS waiting lists officially standing at 7.2 million cases — and the true figure likely closer to 9 million — increasing numbers of patients are seeking faster access to orthopaedic treatment abroad. Part of Spain’s leading HM Hospitales group, HM Málaga offers specialist hip, knee and shoulder surgery delivered by experienced orthopaedic consultants within a modern, high-volume surgical environment.

My Medical Gateway (MMG) is pleased to announce the launch of Hospital HM Málaga on the MMG platform, further strengthening our strategic partnership with HM Hospitales, one of Spain’s largest and most respected private healthcare groups.

The addition of HM Málaga is particularly significant because orthopaedic surgery remains the single largest area of demand among UK patients using MMG. Knee replacement surgery and hip replacement surgery consistently rank as the most requested procedures on the platform, closely followed by shoulder surgery and other musculoskeletal treatments. As NHS waiting lists officially remain at 7.2 million cases — with the true number likely closer to 9 million — increasing numbers of patients are seeking faster access to specialist orthopaedic care abroad.

HM Málaga is exceptionally well positioned to meet that demand. The hospital forms part of HM Hospitales, one of Spain’s largest private healthcare organisations, operating 24 hospitals and 55 healthcare facilities across the country. The group delivers more than 4.6 million outpatient consultations annually and has established a reputation for specialist care across orthopaedics, cardiology, oncology, neurosciences and advanced surgery.

The scale of HM Hospitales’ operations in Málaga demonstrates the strength of the organisation. During 2025, the group’s Málaga facilities delivered more than 387,000 outpatient consultations, performed 19,817 surgical procedures, handled 49,487 emergency attendances, completed 99,771 radiological investigations and carried out more than 510,000 laboratory tests. More than 12,000 patients received inpatient treatment across the Málaga network during the year.

For MMG patients, however, the most important capability is orthopaedics.

HM Málaga’s Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Department is recognised as a regional reference centre and brings together more than 25 specialist orthopaedic surgeons and subspecialists covering every major area of modern musculoskeletal care. Dedicated units focus on hip and knee surgery, shoulder and elbow surgery, hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery, spinal surgery, sports medicine and trauma care.

This breadth of expertise makes the hospital particularly attractive for UK patients seeking treatment abroad. Patients have access to advanced hip and knee replacement surgery, arthroscopic procedures, shoulder stabilisation surgery, rotator cuff repair, sports injury treatment, cartilage preservation programmes and regenerative orthopaedic therapies through the hospital’s orthobiology services.

Among the department’s leading specialists is Dr Iskandar Ahmad Tamimi Mariño, an internationally trained orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee replacement surgery, sports traumatology and hip preservation procedures. His training includes fellowships in both the United Kingdom and Canada, including the renowned South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre, one of Europe’s largest specialist orthopaedic hospitals. His career has also included work with elite-level sports organisations and professional athletes.

The hospital’s orthopaedic capability is supported by multidisciplinary rehabilitation services, physiotherapy, advanced imaging and consultant-led treatment pathways, enabling patients to move seamlessly from diagnosis through surgery and recovery.

Beyond orthopaedics, HM Málaga offers more than 30 medical and surgical specialties including cardiology, oncology, digestive medicine, urology, ophthalmology, neurology, paediatrics and general surgery, providing patients with access to comprehensive consultant-led care within a single hospital environment.

The launch of HM Málaga represents another important milestone in MMG’s growing relationship with HM Hospitales. HM Nou Delfos in Barcelona is already live on the MMG platform and has become an important provider for patients seeking treatment in Spain.

We are also pleased to confirm that two additional HM Hospitales facilities are currently progressing through MMG’s onboarding process. Hospital HM Modelo in A Coruña and Hospital Universitario HM Madrid Río are expected to join the platform following completion of final implementation and approval stages.

The addition of these hospitals will significantly expand patient access to one of Spain’s most respected healthcare groups while providing greater geographical coverage across the country.

For MMG, this growing relationship reflects our commitment to working with established healthcare providers that combine clinical excellence, specialist expertise and substantial treatment capacity. For patients, it means access to trusted hospitals, experienced consultants and faster routes to treatment.

With HM Nou Delfos already live, HM Málaga now launched and two further hospitals expected to follow, MMG is proud to be building a long-term partnership with one of Spain’s leading healthcare organisations.

For UK patients seeking faster access to hip replacement surgery, knee replacement surgery, shoulder surgery and specialist orthopaedic care, HM Málaga represents a major addition to the MMG network and another step forward in expanding access to high-quality healthcare across Europe.
