One of the most common and understandable questions patients ask before choosing treatment abroad is simple: what happens if something goes wrong? It is a fair question. Surgery, wherever it takes place, carries risk. What matters is not the absence of risk, but how that risk is managed, who is responsible and what support exists if complications arise. MMG’s model has been designed specifically to answer that question – not with reassurance alone, but with structure, accountability and continuity of care.
Built on Accredited, Regulated Providers
The first layer of protection sits with the hospitals themselves.
MMG only works with Accredited Healthcare Providers (AHPs) that meet strict accreditation criteria. These are not informal partnerships or referral arrangements. Each hospital must be legally incorporated, fully regulated within its EU member state and compliant with relevant EU healthcare standards.
They must demonstrate:
- strong clinical outcomes and performance standards
- active accreditation with recognised insurance providers
- appropriate insurance cover for all treatments offered
- and good standing with regulators, with no sanctions or compliance issues
Crucially, they must also employ a permanent medical team capable of conducting remote diagnostics and overseeing patient care throughout the treatment pathway.
In practical terms, this means patients are treated in established, regulated hospitals operating to recognised European clinical standards.
An fully-inclusive Treatment Package
A second key safeguard lies in the structure of the MMG Treatment Package itself. Unlike many traditional private pathways, where different elements of care are arranged separately, MMG requires providers to deliver a fully integrated package. This includes:
- pre-operative clinical review
- the surgical procedure
- hospital stay
- and defined post-operative care
This matters because it creates clarity of responsibility. The hospital is not responsible for a single intervention, but for the patient’s treatment pathway as a whole. That responsibility is formalised through the Healthcare Contract signed directly between the patient and the hospital prior to treatment.
Clear Legal and Clinical Responsibility
MMG acts as the platform connecting patients with accredited providers, but clinical responsibility sits clearly with the treating hospital. Under the Terms & Conditions agreed with each AHP, providers are required to:
- deliver treatment to defined clinical standards
- maintain appropriate insurance cover
- and take full responsibility for the care they provide
This mirrors the structure of private treatment in the UK. The treating provider is accountable for the clinical outcome and for managing any complications that arise.
What Happens After You Return Home
A common concern is what happens once the patient is back in the UK.
Here, continuity of care is built into the model. Following treatment, the hospital provides full post-operative discharge documentation and remains responsible for monitoring the patient’s recovery. Patients are able to contact their provider directly for clinical guidance, ensuring that follow-up support does not stop at the point of travel.
In addition, the MMG Treatment Package includes a full post-operative check-up within 90 days of the procedure. This ensures that recovery is progressing as expected and that any issues are identified and managed appropriately. It is a structured safeguard designed to confirm that the treatment outcome has been properly achieved.
Where a complication arises that is clinically linked to the original procedure and falls within the responsibility of the treating hospital, this is governed by the patient’s Healthcare Contract. In such cases, the hospital is required to provide the necessary corrective treatment. If this requires the patient to return to the treating country, the associated travel costs are covered by the hospital.
This ongoing relationship is critical. It means that if concerns arise, patients are not left navigating the situation alone – they have direct access to the clinical team that performed their procedure and a clear, enforceable pathway for resolution.
Access to NHS Care Remains Unchanged
Importantly, choosing treatment abroad does not affect a patient’s entitlement to NHS care. If complications occur after returning home, patients remain fully entitled to NHS treatment based on clinical need, regardless of whether their original procedure was private or overseas.
In urgent situations, patients should:
- call 111 or 999
- or attend their local A&E
For non-urgent concerns, patients can consult their GP and share their discharge documentation, ensuring continuity of information and care.
This dual-layer system – ongoing support from the treating hospital alongside full access to the NHS – provides an additional level of reassurance.
Planning for the Unexpected
While serious complications are rare, prudent preparation is always advisable. MMG recommends that all patients take out medical travel insurance before undergoing treatment abroad. This provides additional financial protection in the unlikely event that further care or extended stays are required.
To support this, MMG has negotiated a discounted policy with Sure Insurance Services. Their Medical Travel Shield policy is specifically designed for patients travelling abroad for treatment, offering tailored cover aligned with the realities of medical travel.
A Structured Approach to Risk
No healthcare system can eliminate risk entirely. The question is whether risk is left unmanaged or addressed through clear structures and responsibilities.
MMG’s approach is built on:
- accredited, regulated providers
- clearly defined treatment pathways
- direct clinical accountability
- and continuity of care before, during and after treatment
Combined with ongoing NHS access and recommended insurance cover, this creates a model where patients are supported at every stage of their journey.
For patients considering treatment abroad, the question is not whether something could go wrong. It is whether there is a clear, reliable system in place if it does. With MMG, that system is designed from the outset.
